Nourish

νόστιμο

Greece is famous for it’s fresh produce and it is common to find food in restaurants that has been picked or fished the same day that it is served. Read on for some of our suggestions for Dimitrios and Jess favourite food in Greece and some tips on what and how to order.

Souvlaki

σουβλάκι

Not your dodgy mates late night kebab. Fresh and tasty skewers of meat usually served with crisp and seasoned French fries.

‘Greek’ Salad

Χωριάτικη Σαλάτα

Greek veggies taste incredible but Greeks are always surprised when tourists order this salad and nothing else! Order as a side but make sure to savour.

Fish

Ψάρι

You’ll find the freshest fish in the world in Greek costal towns. If you get up early enough, you’ll see the local Prevezianos fishermen bringing up the day’s catch to the local tavernas. Order with bread to mop up the healthy oils and eating with fingers is celebrated!

Kelftiko

κλέφτικο

Lamb slow cooked Greek style, in a way devised by mountain renegades in the C18th, to keep their food hidden from the Ottoman occupiers.

Pitta Gyros

γύρος

Pork or Chicken wrapped up with french fries, fresh tomato, onion and Tzatziki. To find Gyros, just follow your nose.

Pastitio

παστίτσιο

A comforting bolognaise dish with layers of tubed spaghetti. Can make a Greek man cry about his Grandmother.

Saganaki

σαγανάκι

Melted cheese is always a safe bet for a side dish - if you’re lucky your waiter will set it on fire with a shout of ‘Opa!’

Baklava

Μπακλαβάς

Causes division in our household as Jess finds this a little too sweet, but just one mouthful is plenty of this syrupy nutty snack. Great with ice-cream if you have a more savoury pallet.
